Will Leiweke Become The New Staple At Madison Square Garden?Published May 23, 2001
Cablevision interviewed NHL Kings & Staples Center President Tim Leiweke yesterday for the position of MSG President, which was vacated by Dave Checketts last week, according to Berman & Johnson of the N.Y. POST. Leiweke, who arrived in N.Y. Monday, "is expected to remain in New York until the end of the week, emerging as the top candidate." Also "in the running" is MSG Exec VP Seth Abraham. A source "familiar with talks" said it is "no surprise [Leiweke is] on a very short list. It's hard to think of many candidates who have more arena experience, running sports franchises, marketing and sponsorship experience." Berman & Johnson add Staples Center earned the Polstar-CIC award this year for the No. 1 arena in the U.S. Leiweke joined the Anschutz Corp. as Kings President five years ago, and "from there he steered the construction" of the two-year-old Staples Center (N.Y. POST, 5/23).
