In Toronto, Al Strachan reports that the NHL is
"starting to work on schedule variations" for the Stanley
Cup Playoffs "designed to keep the playoffs rolling." In
some cases, there would be "no days off between games, even
when teams are switching cities." NHL VP/Hockey Affairs
Colin Campbell, on possibly revising the schedule: "We are
not compressing it" (TORONTO SUN, 3/2)....In Providence,
Paul Kenyon writes that the Shaw's Pro Summer League 2000,
to be held July 17-23 in MA, will feature ten NBA teams, up
from eight last year (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 3/2)....CBA Owner
Isiah Thomas, on smaller markets in the league such as La
Crosse, WI: "Markets such as this, I believe, will become
our best markets because we really have a captive audience
and people are passionate about the sport" (La Crosse
TRIBUNE, 3/1)....The Spring Football League (SFL) announced
that its inaugural season, called "Festival 2000," will
begin on April 29. SFL teams in Houston, L.A., Miami and
San Antonio will play a four-game schedule plus a
championship game in Miami on May 27 (SFL).
